Penguin 2.0 Has Immediate Impact

By May 24, 2013No Comments

Earlier this week, Google released their latest algorithm update – Penguin 2.0. This fourth installment of the Penguin update continues to target webspam and sites that use black hat SEO link building techniques.

Penguin 2.0 will not affect sites that follow clean white hat SEO strategies and provide real value to visitors. Matt Cutts, Google’ resident SEO expert, says the update will benefit many small and medium sized businesses by reducing the number of search results containing spam.

Penguin 2.0 is estimated to affect 2.3% of search queries in the US. The effect is less widespread than the first iteration of the Penguin update and is meant to further crack down on spam and black hat SEO.

Among the hardest hit by Penguin 2.0 are gaming and pornography websites and sites that are often associated with spammy topics, like payday loans. With the first Penguin update, Google penalized some well-known companies such as JCPenny. Penguin 2.0 has affected its share of big brands, such as Dish, Salvation Army, and Reeds Jewelry.

As long as you continue to create timely, relevant content, avoid any black hat SEO techniques, and provide real value to web visitors, your business should avoid any penalties associated with Penguin and future Google algorithm updates.
